PRELUDE
GATHERING
CALL TO WORSHIP
L: God meets us in the night--
All: Before the sun rises,
Before the wound heals,
Before there are answers,
Before there is closure.
L: God meets us in the light--
All: Where joy is effervescent,
Where laughter is contagious,
Where flowers bloom from cracks in the sidewalk,
And where people gather around the table.
L: God meets us at the threshold--
All: At the edge of the water,
At the beginning of the wilderness,
At the start of something new,
On the edge of faith.
L: And if God meets us in all those places,
Then surely God meets us in between--
All: Staying with us through the wilderness.
L: We are not alone. God is all around.
All: Let us worship the God of the here and now.

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS
L: In the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.
L: With honest of heart, let us confess our sin.
Silence is kept for reflection.
L: Merciful God,
All: forgive us.
L: Our will is handcuffed to sin,
All: and we cannot break free.
L: We have spoken
All: when we should have kept quiet.
L: We were silent
All: when we should have said something.
L: We acted
All: when we knew better.
L: We were still
All: when we know we should have moved.
For the wrong we have done, for the good we have failed to do, have mercy on us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
L: Family of faith, if you hear nothing else today, hear this:
God is here. God sees you. God knows you. God meets you at the edge of every new beginning, and God calls you beloved.
All: We are washed by the water.
We are called beloved.
Thanks be to God for a love like that.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
L: Holy God, heavenly Father, in the waters of the flood you saved the chosen, and in the wilderness of temptation you protected your Son from sin. Renew us in the gift of baptism. May your holy angels be with us, that the wicked foe may have no power over us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
All: Amen.

WORD
SCRIPTURE
Genesis 9:8-17
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
Word of God; Word of Life.
Thanks be to God.
Mark 1:9-15
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

HYMN OF THE DAY “O, Love, How Deep,” ELW #322, vs. 1-3, 5-6
STATEMENT OF FAITH
L: Let us confess our faith together:
All: We believe in an inviting God
Who invites the poor and the sick,
The outcast and the lonely,
The immigrant and the refugee,
The awkward and the abrasive,
The young and the old,
The best and the worst—in all of us.
We believe this God meets us where we are--
In heartbreak and high hopes,
Around crowded tables and in quiet homes,
In joy and in suffering,
In loneliness and in connection,
In sanctuaries and in living rooms and parking lots,
In marches and in waiting rooms.
We believe God knows holy rage against injustice,
And this God entered the world to shift our perceptions of power.
From a temple to a manger;
From a palace to a people;
From a throne to a cross;
From a tomb to abundant life.
We believe that God loved first.
We believe that God breathed life into dust.
We believe that God said, “This is good,”
And because we believe that God loved first,
We strive to build lives that reflect God’s love.
May we begin again here. Amen.
