TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
Baptismal Service
August 23, 2020
GATHERING
GREETING & WELCOME
L: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and Communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
All: And also with you.
WHEN WE BAPTIZE
L: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit
All: Amen
L: In Holy Baptism our gracious heavenly Father liberates us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
All: We are born children of a fallen humanity; in the waters of Baptism we are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life.
L: By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the Church which is the body of Christ.
All: As we live with Him and with His people, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God.
L: Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have Hayden Scott Samek baptized into Christ?
Parents: I do.
L: As you bring Hayden to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities:
To live with him among God’s faithful people,
Bring him to the Word of God and the holy supper,
Teach him the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments,
Place in his hands the Holy Scriptures,
And nurture him in faith and prayer, so that he may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace.
Do you promise to help Hayden grow in the Christian faith and life?
Parents: I do.
L: Sponsors, do you promise to nurture Hayden in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God’s Spirit, and to help him live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church?
Sponsors: I do.
L: People of God, do you promise to support Hayden and pray for him in his new life with Christ?
All: We do.

MESSAGE
FLOOD PRAYER
L: Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father:
All: We give you thanks, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and you created heaven and earth.
L: By the gift of water you nourish and sustain us and all living things.
All: By the waters of the flood you condemned the wicked and saved those whom you had chosen, Noah and his family.
L: You led Israel by the pillar of cloud and fire through the sea, out of slavery into the freedom of the promised land.
All: In the waters of the Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit.
L: By the baptism of his own death and resurrection your beloved Son has set us free from the bondage to sin and death, and has opened the way to the joy and freedom of everlasting life.
All: He made water a sign of the kingdom and of cleansing and rebirth.
L: In obedience to his command, we make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Pour out your Holy Spirit, so that those who are here baptized may be given new life. Wash away the sin of all those who are cleansed by this water and bring them forth as inheritors of your glorious kingdom.
All: To you be given praise and honor and worship through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen
BAPTISM of Hayden Scott Samek, son of Wayne & Brittni Samek
PROFESSION OF FAITH
L: Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God, the powers of this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from God?
Response: I renounce them.
L: Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
L: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.*
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
L: Hayden Scott Samek, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.
PRAYER
L: Let us pray. We give you thank, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Hayden with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever.
All: Amen.
ANOINTING
L: Hayden, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever.
All: Amen.
LIGHT
L: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
All: Amen.
PARENTS’ PRAYER
L: O God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon the father and mother of this child. Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them. Make them teachers and examples of righteousness for their child. Strengthen them to their own Baptism so they may share eternally with their child the salvation you have given them, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All: Amen
WELCOME
L: Let us welcome the newly baptized.
All: We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God’s creative and redeeming word to all the world.
HYMN OF CELEBRATION “Jesus Loves Me”
Jesus loves me, this I know
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong.
We are weak, but he is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me.
Yes, Jesus loves me.
The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me, this I know;
As he loved so long ago,
Taking children on his knee
Saying, “Let them come to me.”
