Genesis is filled with stories—stories about beginnings and endings, stories about a family, its hardships, and its blessings. Instead of getting caught up in ‘how’ things happened, Genesis tells us ‘who’ and ‘why’. It frames God’s purpose and is the beginning of the the story of God’s people.

Work together as a family/household as you read, watch, and discuss.

Read: Genesis 12:1-9 (This is the beginning of God’s relationship and promise to Abram/Abraham and Sarai/Sarah.)

Genesis is about beginnings. And stories that shape the people that become the nation of Israel. The stories we tell shape us and help us become who we are.

Discuss: Learn about your birth story. Ask anyone who was there or was part of your life when you were born (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings). What parts of the stories are consistent? What parts were different? Who do you think was most accurate in their story?

Watch: Genesis Part 1 & Part 2 (These explain the overarching stories of Genesis in remarkable detail, considering they are summaries. Each is about 8 minutes long.)

Part 1:

Part 2:

Consider: What is something new that you learned about the book of Genesis? What is something that you understand differently now? What questions do you still have?
